The Center for Sonic and Psychospiritual Research

The Center

Presenting new music and documenting experiments in sound.

Mission

The Center for Sonic and Psychospiritual Research leads the exploration of where the creative arts and healing meet. By presenting new, original and creative music to the public, and by providing research equipment for musicians and metaphysicians, The Center brings together music, the healing arts and metaphysics, treating each as a way in to the fundamental energies that articulate time and shape our realities.

Presenting new music. Concerts in The Tavern's dance-hall give musicians a room and a listening audience for original and improvised work, from touring ensembles to Hudson Valley players trying something for the first time.

Documenting experiments in sound. Performances and sound research at The Tavern are recorded, and many are released on The Tavern's Bandcamp (see Recordings), so each experiment leaves a lasting record. The Center is raising funds for a more robust, dedicated recording setup so that every performance in the dance-hall is captured in high quality. Give to the recording setup.

Bringing disciplines together. The Center sponsors Meta-Artists to live at The Tavern, and gives them the equipment and resources to practice, research and present work that joins music, the healing arts and metaphysics. Series like Anatomy Avant Garde and the monthly astrology forecasts grow out of that meeting.

Vision

The Center will be an intentional community of self-sufficient Meta-Artists: musicians, artists, metaphysicians, healing practitioners and scientists, each working at the edges where their disciplines meet.

The Center rethinks how the public meets performance. Art has long left the audience as an onlooker with little effect on what gets made. The Center brings the audience to the center, so that their biological and psychospiritual makeup and needs shape the work, in communal settings with attention to the beauty of the medium.

A harvest, for example

The Center will host events at harvest times. Each harvest yields certain crops, so we can ask why those crops are ready at that moment. Astrology describes archetypal dynamics that unfold over time and line up with psychological and everyday events, so a harvest is a tangible slice of the energies at play in that season. We can organize music by the same principles that formed the crops, perform it as a harvest ritual, and then cook the crops into a meal for the community.

Residencies

In the short term, The Center will sponsor month-long Meta-Artist residencies at The Tavern. Residents practice, research, write, rehearse and record, on their own and together, and help with agriculture and eco-design. The Tavern hosts public concerts and events where they present their work.

As the outbuildings are rebuilt for visiting residents, a more permanent community will settle in the main house, united by research into music, sound and vibration; metaphysics and fundamental energies; science and the healing arts; and botany and agriculture.

The Center is housed at The Tavern, which provides living space for all residents and a private living room and office for the founder.
